Craig Cardiff’s Grandma is one of the happiest and saddest songs I’ve ever heard, depending on the mood you’re in when you listen to it.

He’s an interesting guy. When I saw him in concert, it was in somebody’s living room during a tour across Canada. We all paid $20 at the door, there were no ticket sales, and the fan who had supplied the living room got a cut to cover expenses (toilet paper, cleaning up after us, letting us mingle around his home). Craig had taken some time off from his day job to tour in support of his latest indie album, since it’s pretty much impossible to pay the bills as a Canadian folk musician.

I love people who just dive right in and follow their dream, even if the road is harder, and less lucrative, than they would like. I’ve been thinking a lot about my old passions, and wondering why lately I just feel lost and directionless. Perhaps that is why Grandma has been stuck in my head for the past few days. I’m not sure yet whether I’m in a place where it makes me happy or sad.
